In the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains was born Daze of Laur, the project of Los Angeles artist Laura Esgro, whose life has always been interwoven with the landscapes and creatures of her homeland. The echo of the Pacific Ocean, the scent of wild sage, the flight of the red-tailed hawk, and the canyon folk-rock legends of the past shaped the spirit of an artist who breathes both music and nature.
As a child, Laura grew up listening to The Kinks, Howlin’ Wolf, Joan Baez, Tom Waits, and the cinematic brilliance of Ennio Morricone during long family road trips. Those journeys became a ritual of sound and poetry, sparking a lifelong passion for storytelling. Though she went on to study ecology and filmmaking, life, like the tide, brought her back to her first and truest love: music.
The Birth of Valley of the Clouds
The creative path is rarely straight. There was a time when Laura felt lost—just a drop of water swallowed in an endless ocean of voices. Comparison to others, that silent poison of every artist, had begun to dim her vision.
So she set out in search of silence, to a remote, untouched island off the coast of Southern California. There, surrounded only by wind and the deep pulse of the Earth, revelation struck. From atop a cliff one morning, she watched the shadows of clouds drift slowly across the valley below. And in that moment, clarity emerged: the sadness and stagnation she carried were not obstacles but part of a greater whole, fragments of life’s eternal, ever-moving cycle.
From this epiphany came “Valley of the Clouds”, a song born like lightning, with words and melody carried by the voice of nature itself. Back home, alongside engineer and producer Tyler Fogerty, Laura gave shape to the song while preserving the raw truth of that experience.
The Song’s Message
Valley of the Clouds is more than music—it is a reminder that sorrow and pain are not lesser states, but sacred chapters of our human story. That sometimes, tears hold more truth than laughter. And above all, that the Earth itself is our greatest teacher, whispering wisdom we often ignore in the rush of modern life.
In every note, Daze of Laur invites us to pause, to listen, to remember that we are part of something larger—an endless cycle where even the shadows have their rightful place. Her music becomes a bridge between the intimate and the universal, between humanity and the natural world.
In an era dominated by noise, Laura Esgro offers us refuge: a valley of clouds where vulnerability becomes beauty, and music becomes the echo of eternity.
