In the musical landscape, where the borders between genres are increasingly blurred, a project emerges that doesn't just cross lines—it fuses them with a clear intention and a distinctly Boricua soul. Second Hand Noise is the solo venture of Melvin Medina, a Puerto Rican artist whose musical DNA is a blend of rock attitude and electronic soul. His latest release, "Goosebump Center," is the perfect proof of this epic fusion.
A Legacy Between Metal and Electro Rock
To understand Second Hand Noise, one must look at the journey of its creator. Melvin Medina is no newcomer. As the keyboardist and synth player for the nu metal act Pripeana and the electro-rock band Celestina Robot, he had already left an indelible mark on the local scene. His work with Celestina Robot resonated beyond the stage when their song "Tú y Yo" became the main theme for the cult film "12 Horas" (12 Hours). Furthermore, they had the honor of sharing the stage with giants like Ill Niño, Nonpoint, and Latin thrash legends Tortura Squad.
The DNA of a Sound: From Nine Inch Nails to Depeche Mode
Medina's musical education is a map of rich and diverse influences. Raised on the hard rock of Van Halen, the metal of Metallica, the grunge of Soundgarden, and the hard rock of Guns N' Roses, he developed a powerful and visceral foundation. However, this always coexisted with a fascination for electronic soundscapes. It was later that artists like Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, The Prodigy, and Portishead shaped his vision toward unpredictable and emotionally charged electronic music. Second Hand Noise is the point where these two worlds converge: the raw power of rock and the textural depth of electronica.
"Goosebump Center": An Epic Fusion of Tension and Natural Chill
His latest song, "Goosebump Center," is the sonic manifesto of this project. The title could not be more fitting. The track is a journey meticulously built on a foundation of natural tension that evokes that hair-raising, skin-tingling sensation. Medina weaves layers of analog synths, creating a landscape that is both familiar and surprising. It is not purely aggressive, nor completely ambient; it finds a perfect middle ground, an organic "chill" born from the friction between evocative melodies and pulsating rhythms. It is an epic fusion that transports the listener, designed for both introspective reflection and instinctive movement.
An Instrument of Connection and Conscious Frequencies
The ethos of Second Hand Noise goes beyond simple entertainment. Medina describes his music as an "instrument of joy, reflection, dance, and unity." Working from his studio in Puerto Rico, he explores a textured and profound sound using analog synthesizers and the prestigious Arturia V Collection. A key element in his creative process is experimenting with 432Hz tuning, a frequency often associated with harmony and natural resonance, which adds an additional layer of depth and intention to his compositions.
The project began with the introspective "Into Coherence" (mixed by Orlando Mendez of Pripeana and mastered by James Musshorn), but its trajectory is now decisively moving toward indie dance territories. With an EP in development and collaborations on the horizon, Second Hand Noise represents both a deep personal exploration and a desire to connect with a community.
Second Hand Noise is, in essence, electronic music with purpose. Designed to move bodies, touch hearts, and occasionally blow minds.
